Since 1986, MacKinnon has been the editorial cartoonist for the the Chronicle Herald in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. His cartoons have been featured in publications and exhibits around the globe and won national and international awards.

In 2016 he was named to the Order of Canada, Canada's highest civilian honour. In 2021 his work was featured on a national postage stamp.
